Lance Stroll has responded to rumours floating during the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix, suggesting that the Aston Martin driver requested retirement from the sport.

Stroll has come under the scrutineering eye of the media and fans alike throughout his F1 career.

And while he has shown flashes of brilliance, one of the biggest criticisms he has faced is that his father, Lawrence Stroll, has assisted his presence in the paddock.

In the past, Stroll’s apparent lack of interest has been correlated with his results on track. In fact, rumours of him seeking an exit from the sport are nothing new.

Last season, he was tipped to exit Aston Martin to try his hand at professional tennis.

At the Dutch GP, last weekend, Brazilian television suggested that he had made repeated requests to the Silverstone-based team for an exit from the team and the sport.

However, according to the reporter, at both times, his father intervened and blocked the move. Stroll, though, has issued a categorical denial when asked about that claim.

“I had no plans on doing that,” he clarified to media including Motorsport Week. “Not sure where that came from.

“I guess he needed something to say! I had no plans on it.”

Stroll looking forward to Monza

Stroll has always driven for midfield teams, he has shown a proclivity for pulling out a result at the Temple of Speed.

Back in 2017, he started the Italian Grand Prix from the front row of the grid, eventually finishing seventh.

Meanwhile, in 2020, he climbed his way onto the podium alongside the likes of Pierre Gasly and Carlos Sainz.

Stroll conceded that he has always enjoyed driving at Monza and looks forward to the race weekend with Aston Martin.

“Good memories from ’17 and ’20, for sure,” he continued. “It’s a track I always enjoy coming back to.

“The track, the fans, the energy around the whole weekend, it’s very special. It’s very unique. The Italian motorsport fans are special, for sure.

“Also, you know, growing up and go-karting, spending a lot of time in Italy, it kind of feels like coming back to the roots when you come back and race in Italy.”
