Fernando Alonso is facing the possibility of missing the remainder of the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix weekend after withdrawing from FP1 due to a muscular back injury.
The Aston Martin driver has been managing the issue since last weekend’s race at Spa-Francorchamps and has now opted to sit out Friday’s opening session as he continues treatment.
A statement from the team confirmed: “In the days following the Belgian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso has been managing a muscular injury in his back.
“As he continues with treatment this morning, he has chosen to sit out of FP1. Felipe Drugovich will drive in FP1 alongside Lance Stroll.
“A decision will then be made on Fernando’s participation in FP2 and the remainder of the weekend in due course.”
Alonso isn’t the only Aston Martin driver to have missed a session this season, with team-mate Stroll sitting out the Spanish Grand Prix due to a recurrence of wrist pain from his 2023 cycling accident, which required further surgery to rectify.
