Fernando Alonso: Lewis Hamilton Ferrari struggles comparable to latter Mercedes F1 woe

Fernando Alonso has indicated Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari woes have been overblown

Fernando Alonso has asserted that Lewis Hamilton‘s initial struggles at Ferrari in Formula 1 are comparable to what he experienced in his last season with Mercedes.

Hamilton’s results during his maiden campaign with Ferrari have been underwhelming against the commotion that accompanied his long-awaited arrival in Maranello.

The Briton, 40, who is encountering his longest run without a podium, has beaten his new team-mate Charles Leclerc on one occasion through the opening 10 rounds.

But Alonso has implied that the intense attention on Hamilton’s woes has been overblown, citing that the trend isn’t dissimilar to what happened at Mercedes in 2024.

Hamilton’s swansong with the German marque witnessed two trips to the top step, though that was bookended by several low moments as he grappled with the W15.

“I think it didn’t change much, the situation from last year, with [George] Russell,” Alonso told media including Motorsport Week.

“It was the same thing last year. The Mercedes was a complicated car to drive, apparently.

“Russell was a little more comfortable, maybe this year it’s the same thing – but without knowing the full picture, it’s difficult to have an opinion.”

Alonso insists Hamilton can overcome Ferrari setback

Hamilton has shown occasional glimpses during his stint with Ferrari, the most notable being at the Chinese Grand Prix when he converted pole position in the Sprint.

Meanwhile, the seven-time F1 champion was in the running to end his podium drought last time out in Canada until a groundhog strike triggered damage to his SF-25.

Alonso, who drove for Ferrari between 2010 and 2014, is certain his ex-McLaren team-mate can overcome the issues that have hindered him over the past 18 months.

“Lewis is a tremendous driver, especially in tracks like this in Canada,” the Spaniard expanded.

“He’s able to exploit all his strengths. So over 24 races, then you do the maths. At the moment he’s struggling, but I think he can reverse the situation quite quickly.”
