George Russell delivered a flawless performance in the Canadian Grand Prix to claim his first victory of the 2025 Formula 1 season as Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris came to blows.

The Mercedes driver went from pole to claim victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve ahead of Max Verstappen in second.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli claimed his first podium finish in F1, the third youngest to do so.

The McLaren pair of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris collided towards the end of the race, the latter having to retire, a big hit to his championship aspirations

Piastri held on for fourth, preserving some points on a difficult day for the papaya squad.

Both Verstappen and Russell started on the Medium C5 tyres with Norris and Charles Leclerc the only drivers in the top 10 to opt for the Hard tyres.

Russell preserves race lead as Antonelli jumps up to third

Russell got away well and kept his lead into Turn 1 with Verstappen settling for second on the opening lap.

Antonelli swooped into third ahead of Piastri as the drivers kept it clean, the Australian likely thinking about his championship fight as he put up little defence to the move.

Into Turn 8, Alex Albon ran wide as he went wheel-to-wheel with Franco Colapinto and had to cut across the grass, dropping down from ninth to 12th as he rejoined the track right back in the midst of the racing action.

Nico Hulkenberg made his way up into ninth in a good start for Sauber, whilst neither Norris nor Leclerc made any places at the start, but crucially, both didn’t lose any positions starting on the Hard tyres.

Verstappen kept Russell within DRS in the opening laps, just six to seven tenths shy of the rear of the W16.

By Lap 6, Antonelli had dropped nearly three seconds off the leading pair as the top two pulled away.

Russell broke DRS on the same lap as Verstappen dropped off, most likely in an attempt to keep his tyres in good condition.

Leclerc, struggling with the dirty air, took to the radio to complain about his Hard tyres, as he was nearly four seconds off from Norris.

The McLaren driver, meanwhile, closed in on Fernando Alonso ahead and managed to get by on Lap 11 with the DRS on the longest straight.

His next target, the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton, was around three seconds up the road.

Leaders Russell and Verstappen pit for Hard tyres

At the same time, Antonelli closed up to Verstappen and attempted to pass going into the last corner, but just as he started to edge by, Verstappen bolted for the pits for a set of Hard tyres on Lap 12.

The next lap, Russell boxed to cover off the undercut threat from the Dutchman, his team-mate taking the lead of the race.

He rejoined the circuit ahead of Verstappen and behind Alonso, who had been passed by Leclerc for fifth place on track.

Antonelli boxed for Hards and behind the Red Bull driver on Lap 15, both Ferraris and McLarens going longer than Red Bull and Mercedes.

On the same lap, Norris swept past Hamilton as the 40-year-old dived into the pits for his stop, Piastri pitted on the next lap, rejoining the race behind Antonelli.

Norris inherited the race lead with Leclerc behind, trying to make their alternative strategy work by going long in the first stint.

Hamilton, who found himself in traffic after pitting, finally made his way back behind Piastri on track, but 10 seconds off the McLaren on Lap 21.

Ferrari also confirmed he had suffered damage since Lap 13, losing 20 points of downforce.

Russell closed in on Leclerc in front, and on Lap 26, he blasted past down the straight and into second, Norris two seconds ahead now.

Norris and Leclerc adopt different strategies

Verstappen followed suit when the Monegasque finally pulled the trigger on Lap 28 and came into the pits, as he slapped on a fresh set of Hards, confirming Ferrari’s plan to stick to the two-stop strategy.

Norris responded on the next lap, abandoning the one stop as well, choosing the Medium tyre instead and rejoining ahead of Leclerc in fifth place, seven seconds behind his team-mate.

At the front, Russell extended his lead over Verstappen, not dropping off in the high temperatures, building a four-second gap to Verstappen in second.

On the Mediums, Norris set about chasing his team-mate, using the full power of his fresh compounds to claw himself back into contention.

The Italian rookie Antonelli set about closing the gap down to the Red Bull in front of him, on course to secure his first podium finish.

However, Verstappen made his second stop on Lap 38 for another set of Hards, returning to the circuit between the Ferrari pair.

On the next lap, Antonelli pitted for the C4 tyres as well and came out right behind the gearbox of the RB21.

Russell peeled into the pits on Lap 42 and made his way out behind Leclerc and into fourth.

It was a slow stop for the British driver with problems getting the left rear tyre off, 3.3 seconds long, but he still held a three-second lead over Verstappen.

Piastri boxed from the lead of the race on Lap 45 as the championship leader slotted in between Antonelli and Hamilton.

Taking another set of Hard tyres, Norris boxed three laps later and back into sixth place, behind Piastri once again.

Albon, unfortunately, succumbed to a PU issue he had been suffering with all race and pulled to a stop at the hairpin escape road – the first retirement of the Grand Prix on Lap 49.

Piastri caught up to the back of Antonelli and within DRS range in a battle for fourth place on track.

Leclec eventually pitted on Lap 54 for a fresh set of Medium tyres, coming back out in sixth but a staggering 11 seconds off Norris with just over 15 laps left of the Canadian GP.

Liam Lawson was ordered to box and retire the car by Racing Bulls on Lap 56, the second retirement of the race.

Title contenders Piastri and Norris collide in Montreal

As Piastri and Antonelli battled hard, Norris reeled the pair in, just around four seconds separating second down to fifth in the closing stages of the race.

Verstappen, meanwhile, also started to gain on Russell ahead, bringing the top five tantalisingly close together.

With traffic ahead, Piastri lost ground to Antonelli ahead as his team-mate now found himself within DRS.

Russell reestablished his two-second lead by Lap 62, easing concerns on the Mercedes pitwall as he navigated the backmarkers.

Norris struggled to get close enough as Piastri used DRS from Antonelli and the traffic to maintain fourth place.

The 24-year-old now started to look ahead rather than in his mirrors, trying to turn defence in attack on Antonelli, who dropped off from Verstappen in second.

On Lap 66, Norris launched an unexpected move on his team-mate at the hairpin, catching Piastri off guard.

He ran deep, allowing Piastri to draw alongside on the run down the long straight.

As they approached the final chicane, Piastri held firm to retain fourth place, but Norris got a strong exit and mounted another challenge down the main straight.

Then came disaster. As Norris attempted to pass, he misjudged the gap and clipped the rear of Piastri’s car, ripping off his front wing and bringing his race to a premature end.

Russell wins in Montreal ahead of Verstappen

Piastri continued and dived into the pits for a fresh set of Soft tyres.

The Safety Car brought the proceedings to an end as Russell held on for victory in Montreal, the fourth different winner of the season and his fourth win of his career.

Verstappen settled for second and Antonelli completed the top three, a first podium for the Italian.

Piastri crossed the line as the sole McLaren in fourth place, Leclerc in fifth and his team-mate Hamilton behind him in sixth.

Aston Martin’s Alonso scored points for the second time in a row, taking a seventh-place finish ahead of the Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg in eighth.

Esteban Ocon came home in ninth for Haas and Carlos Sainz secured the final point-scoring position in 10th in the Williams.
