George Russell went quickest in the second free practice session for Formula 1‘s Canadian Grand Prix, edging out McLaren’s Lando Norris at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

The Briton’s 1:12.123s was enough to put him top of the session, in which only 19 cars ran, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc absent after his shunt in the first run of the day.

Lando Norris’ McLaren was second, just two hundredths of a second behind, with the second Mercedes of Andrea Kimi Antonelli third, almost three tenths further back.

Alex Albon followed up his second place in FP1 with fourth place, followed by Fernando Alonso, with Oscar Piastri in sixth place.

Carlos Sainz’s Williams was seventh, ensuring the first seven cars were all Mercedes-powered. Lewis Hamilton was eighth, with Max Verstappen, fastest earlier in the afternoon, ninth, and Liam Lawson rounding out the top 10.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was packed for free practice

The second Racing Bulls of Isack Hadjar was 11th, with Pierre Gasly and Gabriel Bortoleto 12th and 13th, followed by the Brazilian’s team-mate Nico Hulkenberg.

Yuki Tsunoda was down in 15th, with Oliver Bearman, Esteban Ocon and Franco Colapinto following, the Argentinian the last driver to set a laptime.

Lance Stroll, who returns to action after missing the Spanish Grand Prix due to his persistent wrist problems, failed to set a time after scuffing the barriers early in the session, damaging his front-left suspension.

The modest conditions at the circuit will have no doubt played into the hands of the Mercedes team, its car performing better when the heat is less intense.

Both Russell and Antonelli, who suffered a miserable triple-header, will be hoping to continue this level of form into Saturday’s qualifying session.
