George Russell is poised to extend with Mercedes, despite reported Red Bull talks

Mercedes has revealed when it plans to continue talks with George Russell over a new Formula 1 deal amid reports that he has also held conversations with Red Bull.

Russell’s impressive beginning to the 2025 season with three podiums in the opening five rounds has placed him in line to earn a multi-term extension with Mercedes.

However, Max Verstappen’s uncertain situation at Red Bull has provided a possible sting in the tail amid Mercedes boss Toto Wolff’s abiding interest in the Dutchman.

Verstappen was recognised as Wolff’s top target to succeed the now-departed Lewis Hamilton last season until he settled on promoting rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

But Red Bull’s inconsistent start to the campaign has revived speculation that Verstappen might seek a switch elsewhere with new regulations on the horizon in 2025.

Wolff, though, has reiterated that there have been no discussions with Verstappen’s entourage about a potential move as he remains committed to his current pairing.

“We didn’t have any conversations,” Wolff told The Athletic.

“At the moment, where it is with George and Kimi, there’s no doubt to question that set up for the future, as it goes.”

When will Mercedes resume Russell talks?

Wolff disclosed that Mercedes intends to resume negotiations with Russell over a contract extension once the European leg of the schedule commences next month.

“We will pick those talks up once we’re in the European season, there’s no stress,” he continued.

“He’s performing to the highest levels, as we have hoped and expected. He’s delivering, there’s no doubt about that.

“There’s not more you could demand from that. We have this summer window. We have no reason to challenge or question anything as it is now.”

Mercedes interest in Verstappen ‘understandable’

Russell, who indicated that there is substance to the claims that he is closing in on a new deal, divulged that he could understand Wolff’s fascination with Verstappen.

“Why wouldn’t they want to sign Max? It’s totally understandable,” the Briton told PA.

“He’s the best at the moment. He’s a four-time world champion. That’s not anything against me or Kimi.

“There are two drivers for every team and he is one person. So that doesn’t concern me one bit. Right now, I think I am performing as good as anyone on this grid.”

In the circumstance where the break clause in Verstappen’s Red Bull deal becomes active and Mercedes capitalise, Russell would be poised to end up without a drive.

According to The Race, Russell has been involved in tentative conversations with Red Bull boss Christian Horner as the two parties explore their respective situations.
