Honda will provide an input into Aston Martin's driver line-up

Honda President Koji Watanabe has disclosed that the organisation will “voice our opinions” about the driver line-up Aston Martin fields in the 2026 Formula 1 season.

The Japanese marque’s partnership with Red Bull will conclude when the ongoing campaign ends as it prepares to become Aston Martin’s engine supplier from 2026.

Honda’s long-standing relationship with Yuki Tsunoda has seen him be regarded as a viable candidate to head to Aston Martin since the deal was announced in 2023.

But while Tsunoda has since secured a coveted chance with Red Bull’s senior side, Watanabe has divulged that Honda will still hold an input on Aston Martin’s drivers.

Watanabe’s revelation comes despite the Silverstone-based squad’s current duo – Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll – both possessing contracts through next season.

“The number of seats will be reduced,” Watanabe told The Japan Times.

“However, as for us, we will continue to voice our opinions as Honda in deciding the drivers for 2026 and beyond.

“Obviously the team has the final say in deciding which drivers join the team … but the situation will be the same [as with Red Bull] where we will have our say.”

Honda ‘very proud’ of Red Bull results

Tsunoda’s maiden appearance with Red Bull came on home soil in Japan, a weekend which saw Max Verstappen win in a design scheme that was a tribute to Honda.

Verstappen is chasing a fifth consecutive Drivers’ Championship using a Honda engine, while the manufacturer has also powered Red Bull to two Constructors’ titles.

Reflecting on the two parties’ illustrious partnership, Watanabe said: “Looking back now, we’re very proud of the results that we have achieved with this partnership.

“Especially with Yuki being here at a home race, racing for Red Bull … it’s a very important and very significant weekend.”
