Carlos Sainz went fastest in the afternoon session on day two of the Formula 1 pre-season testing programme at the Bahrain International Circuit.

The Spaniard, who went third in the morning session, was opted by the team to go back out for a second run, set a time of 1:29.348s, having set 127 laps.

Lewis Hamilton was second for Ferrari, his morning lap time keeping him high on the time sheets.

Team-mate Charles Leclerc clocked just over half of Sainz’s laps, but still managed third place with a 1:29.431s after 83 laps.

George Russell was fourth with his morning time, as team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli – fastest yesterday AM – was fifth with a 1:29.784s having covered 87 laps.

Lance Stroll was sixth for Aston Martin, setting a 1:30.229s after just 57 laps.

Liam Lawson, like Sainz, was utilised by his team to go out again, the Red Bull man’s fastest time being a 1:30.252s, covering a total of 91 laps.

Alpine’s Jack Doohan got himself into the top 10 overall, setting 1.30.368s after 80 laps, with the sister Alpine of Pierre Gasly was ninth overall after his morning run.

The top 10 rounded-up by Isack Hadjar, the Racing Bulls driver clocking-up 94 laps, his best a 1:30.675s.

Lando Norris ended the day in 14th place for McLaren, but appeared to run a very competitive race distance which will catch the attention of the team’s rivals.

The Englishman also looked set to rack-up the fastest time of the session, but aborted the run when it looked as if he would dethrone Sainz from the top of the order.
