Carlin’s Sergio Sette Camara claimed his maiden Formula 2 pole position during a closely contested qualifying session at the Hungaroring.

Jack Aitken had led the way during the early stages of proceedings, edging ART Grand Prix team-mate George Russell, before Prema’s Nyck de Vries claimed the initiative.

Aitken responded with a time of 1:27.430 and watched on from the pit wall for the remainder of the session as his rivals strived to improve.

Most fell short – until Sette Camara hauled himself up the order by posting a lap of 1:27.400, beating Aitken by a mere 0.030s.

De Vries was left in third spot while title leader Russell had to be content with fourth position, as his run of three straight pole positions came to an end.

Russell’s primary title rival Lando Norris finished sixth, behind Campos’ Luca Ghiotto, and was never a threat for the leading positions throughout the 30-minute session.

Artem Markelov, Arjun Maini, Ralph Boschung and Louis Deletraz rounded out the top 10.

Alexander Albon, third in the standings, managed only 13th, narrowly in front of DAMS team-mate Nicholas Latifi, while debutant Alessio Lorandi took 17th.
