Sergio Perez backs himself to continue at Red Bull next year

Sergio Perez is confident in his position at Red Bull amid mounting speculation, claiming “there’s a reason why” the Formula 1 team extended his contract.

Perez started the 2024 season as a dependable number two to Max Verstappen, scoring four podiums in the first five rounds as the Red Bull RB20 held an advantage over the rest of the field.

However, as the season has progressed, Red Bull has regressed and rival outfits have overcome the reigning Constructors’ Champions.

But while Verstappen has been able to retain his Drivers’ title amid the struggle, Perez has floundered, scoring 251 points less than his Dutch team-mate across 22 rounds.

Perez remains under contract in 2025, thanks to a multi-year extension signed ahead of this year’s GP which the Mexican said was warranted.

“I think at the end of the day the team has all the information,” he said.

“There’s a reason why we extended my contract during the year.

“At the end of the day the team has everything. We exactly know where we are in terms of performance, in terms of issues, and difficulties that we’ve had.

“We are a team and we know exactly internally where everything stands.

“We’re working really hard as a team to come through and get back into a much better season than the one that we just had.”

Red Bull form ‘difficult to understand,’ says Perez

As speculation over his future continues to boil over, Perez revealed that he and Red Bull continue to work together to fix his issues with the RB20.

Despite Verstappen maintaining his title-winning ways, Perez is adamant his poor form, which has recently seen him exit Q1 in two of the last three qualifying sessions, is down to the Red Bull RB20.

“I think it’s very difficult for people to understand that they are not part of the team or are not on a daily basis,” Perez said.

“From one race to another, let’s say you are so far away.I think when you are not able to extract 100% out of your car, it’s irrelevant how good your car is.

“I haven’t been able to extract 100% out of my car because of the difficulties I’ve had in the last few months.

“I think that’s the main issue. I think you go through periods.

“I think as a team we are understanding and we are working really hard to make sure that we can fix them.”
