McLaren has lodged a petition with the FIA Formula 1 race stewards for a right of review, following Lando Norris’ five-second penalty at the United States Grand Prix.

Norris was penalised for leaving the track and gaining an advantage over Red Bull’s Max Verstappen on Lap 52 of the United States GP.

At the time of the incident, Norris’ engineer Will Joseph told the McLaren driver he was ahead at Turn 12 before Verstappen took the inside line and ran his title rival off the circuit.

By the letter of the law, Verstappen had every right to commit to the corner in the manner he did, hence the stewards applied the five-second penalty.

Still, almost a week later at the Mexico City GP, a McLaren team representative will meet with the stewards via video conference at 14:30 local time.

The hearing will be split into two parts, the first allowing McLaren the chance to plead its case and for the Stewards to hear evidence that “significant and relevant new element which was unavailable to the party seeking the Review at the time of the Decision concerned”.

If the stewards are satisfied that sufficient new evidence relating to the incident is put forth, a second part of the hearing will commence “at a time to be advised.”

McLaren believes ‘significant’ new evidence can overturn Lando Norris penalty

“McLaren confirms it has submitted a petition for a review relating to the decision to penalise Lando with a five-second penalty at the 2024 United States Grand Prix, for leaving the track and gaining a lasting advantage, which we believe to be unfair,” a statement from McLaren read (via The Race).

“We believe there is a significant and new element that was unavailable to us at the time the decision was made.

“We have submitted the relevant paperwork with the FIA and will issue no further comment while this process is ongoing.

“We have the utmost respect for the FIA and the stewards for the difficult job that they do and appreciate the open and collaborative relationship we enjoy with them.”
