Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton made up five places on the opening lap of the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix but spun out of the race just one lap later.

The error came at Turn 19, the same place Hamilton’s team-mate George Russell crashed out in during Qualifying.

Polesitter Lando Norris lost the lead of the race at lights out after fighting Max Verstappen hard into Turn 1 and Charles Leclerc flew past the pair of them to snatch first place.

Norris fell down the order to fourth place and Verstappen battled with the other Ferrari of Carlos Sainz in the opening laps of the Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver was aggrieved, feeling Verstappen forced him off track, but no action was taken.

A frenetic opening couple of laps was paused after the seven-time world champion Hamilton threw away his good start by losing the rear end of his car.

Hamilton started the race from 17th place after he was knocked out of Q1 in Qualifying on Saturday but made several places on the first lap.

All that good progress was worth nought with Hamilton forced to watch the rest of the race from the paddock.

Leclerc held onto first place after the Safety Car restart, leading Verstappen and Sainz.
