Ex-F1 driver labels Daniel Ricciardo’s potential exit ‘confusing’

Daniel Ricciardo won't return with RB to complete the 2024 F1 season

RB has announced the much-expected news that Daniel Ricciardo won’t return to the complete the remaining six rounds of the 2024 Formula 1 season with the team.

Ricciardo was expected to relinquish the seat that he has held since last summer in 2025, but Red Bull has elected to make a change to the team’s line-up in advance.

The Australian’s position in the sport gathered vast attention across last weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix as he conceded that it could have marked his last race in F1.

Ricciardo’s replacement is set to be Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson, who excelled when he made five F1 appearances with the Faenza-based squad last season.

“He has brought a lot of experience and talent to the Team with a fantastic attitude, which has helped everyone to develop and foster a tight team spirit,” RB boss Laurent Mekies said.

Ricciardo’s time in F1 appears to be at an end, bringing the curtain down on a career that has contained eight wins, 32 podiums and three pole positions in 257 starts.

“I’ve loved this sport my whole life. It’s wild and wonderful and been a journey,” Ricciardo posted on Instagram.

“To the teams and individuals that have played their part, thank you. To the fans who love the sport sometimes more than me haha thank you.

“It’ll always have its highs and lows but it’s been fun and truth be told I wouldn’t change it. Until the next adventure.”

The ex-McLaren driver has expressed that he would be reluctant to pursue a seat elsewhere in F1 amid his failure to return to the front with the senior Red Bull squad.
