F1 Commission votes against expanding current points structure

The top 10 will continue to score points from 2025.

The latest meeting between the Formula 1 Commission has resulted in the unanimous choice not to expand the number of points scorers in the sport from next term.

Earlier this season, it was revealed that talks were to be had over revising the current points allocation to increase the points-scoring chances from 10 positions to 12.

However, the matter was discussed at the third F1 Commission meeting in 2024 and the parties were united in their view that the current configuration should remain.

This means that the current structure which has been in operation since 2010 and rewards the winner with 25 points down to 10th spot with one will be used in 2025.

Meanwhile, a tweak has been made to the 2026 technical rules as the minimum weight limit in the last campaign with the current ground effect cars will be increased.

This comes down to the minimum weight for the drivers being bolstered from 80kg to 82kg to alleviate well-being concerns, rounding the overall number up to 800kg.

Last month, the FIA publicised the proposed guidelines behind the new 2025 regulations and an update to the sporting and technical rules will be made on 2 October.

Looking forward to the next era in the sport, the F1 Commission has agreed that pre-season testing will comprise nine days of running to be split across three events.

Elsewhere, it has been finalised that costs relating to maternity/paternity leave, sick leave, and team entertainment will be excluded from the teams’ cost cap budgets.

As ever, all mentioned regulation changes to have been discussed among the F1 Commission will be pending approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC).
