Magnussen eyes Haas stay amid ‘unfinished business’

Kevin Magnussen (DEN) Haas F1 Team. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 6, Miami Grand Prix, Thursday 2nd May 2024. Miami International Autodrome, Miami, Florida, USA.

Kevin Magnussen says his priority is to remain with Haas in Formula 1 next season and believes he has “unfinished business” with the team.

Magnussen has had a relationship with Haas stretching back to 2017, and returned to the squad ahead of the 2022 season, having spent 2021 on the sidelines.

Magnussen is out of contract at the end of 2024 but Haas has long favoured stability, and his prospects of staying have ostensibly been enhanced by the impending departure of Sauber-bound Nico Hulkenberg.

“Honestly I thought it would be me and Nico again next year, I thought that would be likely,” said Magnussen.

“Obviously he’s taken the opportunity with Sauber and Audi, which I wish him all the best with that, we’ll continue focusing and enjoying this year, continuing the progress that we’ve made as a team for this year and hopefully building on that beyond this year.”

Magnussen agreed that staying at Haas is “the most likely option” and expanded on the current situation.

“I still feel like there’s some unfinished business here, I’ve been here for many years now and there’s always been like some potential, that we haven’t seen, to really exploit,” said Magnussen.

“I feel like now maybe we’re building a better foundation to go and exploit that potential that I feel we have.

“We have some very talented people in Haas, we’ve had that since day one, when people didn’t give us a lot of credit in the beginning because they thought we were just copying Ferrari.

“I think we’ve shown quite a few times that we don’t just copy, we are doing our own thing, and I think this year if anything we’re copying someone else other than Ferrari – we’re copying Red Bull, so is everyone else! – there’s a lot of talent here, and a lot of potential I’d like to see fulfilled.”
