Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has taken pole position for tomorrow’s Formula 1’s Chinese Grand Prix during a session which saw a notable high-profile elimination in Q1.

Verstappen headed the times with a best lap of 1:33.660s to have a three-tenth advantage over team-mate Sergio Perez, with Fernando Alonso third for Aston Martin.

Lando Norris cast aside his Sprint disappointment to secure a second-row start in fourth, ahead of McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc in sixth place.

Carlos Sainz, who spun into the barrier on the exit of the last corner in the nascent stages of Q2, rebounded from that setback to end one place behind his team-mate.

George Russell trailed those two in eighth in the sole-running Mercedes in the final stage, with Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg and Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas completing the top 10.

Meanwhile, having raced to second in the earlier Sprint, Lewis Hamilton made a mistake at the Turn 14 hairpin and slipped back to 18th position on the grid for the race.
