Marc Marquez claimed a close pole position for the British round of the MotoGP World Championship on Saturday with a record-breaking lap of the Silverstone circuit.

The Spaniard is the first to break the two minute barrier with his pole lap of 1:59.941 and he was the only rider to manage that, although things were tight at the top with Valentino Rossi just 0.084 off in second.

Briton's Cal Crutchlow was a further 0.081 behind Rossi to secure a front-row starting position at his home event for LCR Honda.

Maverick Viñales heads up the second row a further two tenths back on Crutchlow, just ahead of the fastest man in FP4, Ducati's Jorge Lorenzo. As on Friday, the number 99 was the top Ducati at Silverstone in qualifying – just ahead of team-mate Andrea Dovizioso in P6, 0.173 back.

Dani Pedrosa made the biggest leap forward on Saturday afternoon after a tough Friday and FP3, coming through Q1 to move up into seventh – and by only 0.006. Just behind Pedrosa in the middle of the third row is Tech 3's Johann Zarco, with Aleix Espargaro completing Row 3 as he rides through the pain barrier.

Jonas Folger, the second graduate from Q1, also managed to make some progress on Saturday afternoon and will start from tenth – just ahead of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Pol Espargaro. Scott Redding completed the top 12.
