Norris admits McLaren now unlikely to take 2023 F1 victory

McLaren’s Lando Norris has become the latest recipient of the prestigious Lorenzo Bandini Trophy after registering his best season in Formula 1 in 2023.

The award is named after the one-time F1 race winner, who entered 42 grands prix before losing his life when he succumbed to burns from a crash at the 1967 Monaco GP.

The Bandini Trophy, a ceramic replica of the Italian’s Ferrari 312/67 car, was created in 1992 to reward an F1 driver that showed “a commendable performance in motorsport”.

However, it is not handed out on results alone, but rather how any success was achieved and both the individual’s character and approach towards their racing profession.

The reputable prize has been won by several F1 World Champions, including Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher.

After the returning Kevin Magnussen was chosen for his exploits in 2022, Norris became the latest to receive the trophy in a ceremony held in Brisighella, Emilia-Romagna

Norris is the first McLaren driver to have his name associated with the award since Hamilton was recognised in 2010 for his campaign with the Woking squad in 2009.

Lando was in Italy to collect the award which honours an individual for their achievements in F1, it is not based on race results, but on how success was achieved, as well as the recipient's character and approach to racing.
