Russell: Formula 3 should not be allowed to run 30 cars

George Russell believes Formula 3 should not be permitted to run 30 cars on one track due to safety concerns.

12 teams currently operate in FIA F3, with three teams fielded by each squad.

At times, it has created traffic issues during qualifying, particularly at high-speed circuits such as Monza or the Red Bull Ring.

In recent weeks, safety has been a topic of conversation following the death of Dilano van’ t Hoff in the Formula Regional European Championship at Spa-Francorchamps.

Van’ t Hoff’s car was struck at high speed in wet conditions along the Kemmel Straight, just weeks before Formula 1 and its junior categories ventured to the Belgian track.

A lack of visibility in wet conditions has been highlighted by several drivers, but Russell believes that the problem won’t be solved for a number of years.

“I think the way the FIA goes about things now is better than it has been in the recent past,” Russell said in Belgium.

“It all seems a bit more organised with Nikolas [Tombazis] at the helm there and Steve Nielsen has been a really great addition to the FIA.

“Niels [Wittich, F1 Race Director] was thrown into the role and I think it’s just having that open dialogue between us and communications are better than ever been.

“We all want decisions and answers, but the fact is we are probably not going to find the solution for better visibility for years to come. It’s challenging, it’s really not easy.”

Russell expressed his concerns for the junior categories, believing that the F3 field is overcrowded.

“I fear a little bit for the junior categories now, I truly think F3 should not be allowed 30 cars on track at one time at any point, even in dry conditions,” he said.

“I think it’s a matter of time before we have a big accident there too.”
