Max Verstappen has reacted to his scary moment during the Belgian Grand Prix when he almost lost control of his car through Eau Rouge.
Verstappen was leading the race at the time, having progressed to the front of the field after starting in sixth position.
However, midway through the race, rain started to fall – and although it didn’t force any driver onto a wet weather tyre, it provided an added challenge around the lap.
Verstappen had a high-speed twitch as he climbed the Eau Rouge corner, but managed to save the RB19 from spinning into the barriers.
Reflecting on the moment, Verstappen said: “Yeah, that’s probably not the best place to go sideways but luckily nothing happened.
“Of course, also, with the new changes through there, you have a little bit more run-off, but it’s still not a nice corner to have a moment.”
Verstappen went on to dominate in the remainder of the grand prix, with the weather failing to heavily disrupt the weekend after heavy rain on Friday and Saturday.
The Dutchman now boasts a 125-point lead in the Drivers’ Championship heading into the summer break – but Verstappen played down the significance of his lead.
“I don’t think it matters a lot, to be honest,” he said. “I just want to have a nice time now. Have a bit of time with family and friends and we’ll go to Zandvoort.
“It’s a completely different track again to Spa but I’m expecting if we do a good job with the set-up, we will be quick.”
When the sport returns at the Dutch Grand Prix in August, Verstappen will have the opportunity to take his ninth consecutive win and match the all-time record set by Sebastian Vettel.
