Leclerc: Silverstone will expose Ferrari’s F1 weaknesses
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Charles Leclerc has suggested that Ferrari will be unable to produce a repeat performance of the Austrian Grand Prix in Silverstone.

Leclerc showed strong form throughout the race from Spielberg and took the chequered flag in second place, taking his second podium of the 2023 campaign.

Ferrari has struggled for pace so far this year, but has been introducing upgrades to boost its on-track form.

Last year, it emerged victorious at the British Grand Prix – however it has been unable to challenge anywhere near the front of the field this season.

While Leclerc spoke positively over Ferrari’s direction, he says that he expects the SF23 car will struggle around the Silverstone Circuit.

“I think since Barcelona, the feeling is going in the right direction,” he said.

“We couldn’t really prove it at any other track other than Barcelona, in Austria, the feeling was good and the pace was a bit better than what we had for the first part of the season.

“I think it shows that there were some steps forward made.

“However, we shouldn’t get carried away. The Red Bull is still a lot in front.

“I think this track and this event, it will expose our weaknesses so we might struggle a bit more than what we’ve seen in Austria.

“But it is clear that the feeling and the pace is a bit better.”

Pirelli will introduce a new tyre construction this weekend, making them more robust in response to the unforeseen speed of the 2023 cars.

Ferrari has struggled with its tyre degradation so far this year, but Leclerc says it is too early to determine if the new tyres will help or hinder the Italian squad.

“I’m not sure yet. During the free practice, it’s going to be very important to assess that, to see how much of a difference it is,” he said.

“In terms of tyre degradation, if we need to fine-tune the car to these new constructions, then we will see.

“But we don’t know yet whether it’s going to be a benefit or a weakness.”
