McLaren unveils throwback chrome F1 livery for British GP
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

McLaren will run a special one-off livery for the British Grand Prix this weekend.

The new design is a throwback to the iconic chrome colour scheme that was used from the 2006 to the 2014 season.

In that time, it claimed one Drivers’ Championship, as Lewis Hamilton secured his first F1 title in 2008 following an intense battle against Felipe Massa.

The livery for the upcoming race weekend has been designed alongside McLaren’s team partner Google Chrome – which launched in 2008.

Lando Norris, who scored the team’s best result of the season so far last time out in Austria, will also sport a special helmet design.

“It’s no secret that racing fans love McLaren’s classic chrome livery,” said McLaren CEO Zak Brown.

“Google Chrome wanted to bring back elements of this iconic livery to celebrate our team’s history at the British Grand Prix, and we’re excited to be able to give our fans what they want.

“I’m sure this livery will bring back great memories for many of our fans, and I can’t wait to see it out on track at our home race.”

Both Norris and team-mate Oscar Piastri will have special race suits for the weekend to reflect the race livery.

McLaren has endured a difficult start to the 2023 season, admitting prior to the start of the campaign that it had missed development targets with its MCL60.

It introduced upgrades at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix to steer development in another direction before Norris’ car was fitted with new components last time out in Austria.

The British driver was competitive throughout the weekend and delivered a strong fourth-place result.

Nick Drake, VP Global Marketing, Google, added: “It’s been a privilege for the Google Chrome team to work with McLaren on bringing back elements of an iconic livery to inspire this takeover.

“We were delighted with the fans’ reaction to the branded wheel covers that introduced our partnership, and now Google Chrome is putting chrome back on the McLaren for its home race.

“We’re looking forward to  Silverstone and hope all McLaren fans enjoy what promises to be a really exciting weekend of racing.”

McLaren will not be the only team with a special livery this weekend – Williams will also unveil a new scheme as it celebrates 800 races in F1.
