Vowles hints at impending major signing for Williams’ technical structure

Williams Team Principal James Vowles has teased a big signing for the Grove-based squad’s technical outfit.

Vowles has taken over at the helm of Williams for the 2023 season, departing Mercedes following a period of unprecedented success.

The Briton has occupied the role previously held by Jost Capito, who left the team last year alongside technical director F.X. Demaison. 

However, the vacancy left by Demaison has not yet been filled as Williams looks to lift itself upwards into the F1 pack after competing towards the back of the grid for the last number of years.

There has been no shortage of movement in the F1 market for technical staff, with McLaren parting ways with James Key and employing David Sanchez in his place earlier this year.

Key has since taken up a position with Alfa Romeo, while Mercedes have also rotated staff by placing James Allison in the technical director role, with his previous position as chief technical officer taken up by Mike Elliott.

Amid rumours that Williams is on the verge of making an announcement, Vowles told the Beyond The Grid podcast: “Technical Director… so what I can say is the following.

“Since I’ve started, it’s been my primary focus, making sure we have the right technical structure in place. 

“And also putting in place structures that allow us to really move on and develop without the external bodies being in place yet.

“Before the end of the year, you’ll see that the structure would have changed here internally with support from external individuals.

“But we’re not at a stage yet where I can talk any more about it. It’s a very sensitive time, as I’m sure you would imagine involving other organisations. 

“There will be news shortly, in fact, but not today.”

Williams currently sits ninth in the Constructors’ Championship after the opening eight rounds of the 2023 campaign.

The team was buoyed by Alexander Albon’s strong drive to seventh place at the Canadian Grand Prix last time out, allowing it to leap AlphaTauri in the standings.
