Albon ‘feels bad’ for Tsunoda over narrow F1 point misses

Alexander Albon says that he “feels bad” for Yuki Tsunoda amid the Japanese driver’s series of results just outside the top 10.

At the opening two rounds of the year in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, Tsunoda crossed the line in 11th place.

However, the following two races in Australia and Azerbaijan saw him collect a point at each event as he came home in 10th.

They remain AlphaTauri’s only points of the 2023 campaign so far, as it was unable to add to its tally in the following rounds.

In Miami, Tsunoda once again finished 11th but was on course for points in Monaco before a brake issue saw him drop back through the field late on.

At the following round in Barcelona, he crossed the line in ninth place but a five-second time penalty dropped him out of the points.

AlphaTauri now sits at the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship after Albon starred to a seventh place result at the Canadian Grand Prix last weekend.

“We’ve jumped AlphaTauri now I think in the standings,” Albon said. “In some ways, I feel bad for Yuki, if he’s finishing P11 every race.

“It’s about making those moments count, and fortunately for us, we’ve had two opportunities to score points this year, and we have done so.”

Albon opened the season in Bahrain with a 10th place finish and was running well inside the top 10 in Australia before a crash eliminated him from the race.

With Williams’ package coming alive at high-speed tracks, Albon is hopeful that the upcoming round from Austria will play into its hands.

“I think Austria should be a decent track for us,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it.

“I find longer corners a bit of a weak point for us. When I think about Barcelona, Turn 3, Turn 4, Turn 9, 10, 12, [we] struggle a little bit.

“When you’ve got these short corners, chicanes almost, Melbourne, Canada, I feel like we’re good at small-U angles, if that makes sense. That’s my theory! Alex Albon’s theory, not the team’s.

“I think for Austria, it’s a bit of a mix. We’ve still got these long corners, like Turn 6, Turn 7. Let’s see. Of course we’re going to be better than we were pre-package.”
