Only Albon to run upgraded Williams in Canada

Alexander Albon (THA) Williams Racing FW45 makes a pit stop. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 8, Spanish Grand Prix, Sunday 4th June 2023. Barcelona, Spain.

Williams will bring a raft of updates to its FW45 for this weekend’s Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, which will be run by Alex Albon.

Williams is last in this year’s Constructors’ Championship, having scored only a point in Bahrain courtesy of Albon, but has been more regularly involved in the back of the midfield fight.

Williams will introduce updates to the FW45 for Montreal, with Albon running the upgrades, and rookie team-mate Logan Sargeant using the older-specification car.

It is a similar approach to 2022 when Albon was the first to receive the revised concept before then team-mate Nicholas Latifi used the upgrades later on.

“The track in Montreal should play slightly more to the strengths of the FW45 than Monaco and Barcelona did,” said Williams’ Head of Vehicle Performance Dave Robson.

“We expect to be more competitive, but we will take our time on Friday to understand if the new package is delivering as expected.

“Alongside the work to understand the upgrades, we will look at the usual tyre work on Friday as well as understanding how the track surface has weathered in the last 12 months.

“Overtaking is easier in Montreal than it was at the last two races, which may open up some additional strategy options during the Grand Prix, if the tyre degradation can be managed.”

Albon added that “we have an upgrade coming for this weekend, so it should be interesting to see how it performs.

“Everyone at the factory has done a huge job to get this upgrade ready for the weekend, so hopefully we can have a good result.”
