Russell and Hulkenberg pick up penalty points in Monaco

George Russell and Nico Hulkenberg have both added to their penalty point tallies after the Monaco Grand Prix.

Russell was penalised for an unsafe rejoin at Turn 5 late on in the race as he recovered to the track following a mistake in wet conditions.

The Mercedes driver made contact with Sergio Perez as he came back to the track and claimed that he couldn’t see anything amid the spray.

Along with the five-second time penalty that he was issued, Russell copped two penalty points on his Super Licence – bringing his total to six in the last 12 months.

Russell now has the second-highest number of penalty points on the grid, trailing only Pierre Gasly who has eight.

The Briton was disappointed as he felt the mistake that led to the penalty cost him a spot on the podium.

Hulkenberg, meanwhile, has picked up his first penalty points of the year as he was issued two for colliding with Logan Sargeant.

The duo made contact on the opening lap when Hulkenberg attempted to overtake the Williams racer at the end of the first sector.

Hulkenberg was penalised further for failing to serve the five-second time penalty correctly and was hit with a punishment of another 10 seconds.

Hulkenberg classified in 17th.

“The weekend hasn’t been too good but still, the race was fun going through all the different stages with different tyres and conditions,” he said.

“I’m happy I got through it and came through quite well. I feel the pace was actually pretty decent when I had some clear track but for most of the race, I was stuck in traffic like you are in Monaco.

“To some extent, I feel the problems we had have been Monaco specific, so I’m quite hopeful in Barcelona we should be in a better position, so I look forward to that.”
