FP2 crash a ‘typical Monaco miscalculation’, says Sainz

Carlos Sainz crashed out of second practice for the Monaco Grand Prix in dramatic fashion, however he believes that the incident won’t hamper Ferrari’s chances this weekend.

Ferrari enjoyed a good Friday in Monaco with Carlos Sainz topping FP1 and both drivers in the top three at the end of FP2.

Speaking after the session, Sainz described the incident as a ‘typical Monaco miscalculation’. In fact, the crash itself was almost identical to those of Max Verstappen in 2016 and 2018, Stoffel Vandoorne and Esteban Ocon in 2017, and Nicholas Latifi and Charles Leclerc in 2021.

Just like those before him Sainz clipped the inside barrier at Turn 15, breaking the front left suspension of his Ferrari before he became a passenger and ended his session in the barriers at Turn 16.

“It was a very small crash to be honest,” Sainz told F1TV.

“I just clipped the wall on the inside of 15. A typical Monaco miscalculation really.

“It’s a shame as the mechanics have had to spend extra time on the car today, but in terms of confidence and lap time I’ve been on it all day but a small miscalculation in one corner isn’t going to affect that.”

“I think we are at least on the right track to challenge [for pole], but the Red Bulls are still quick and leading. We have been closer than any other weekend and we hope that we can at least give them a run for their money, but I think it’s still going to be tough.”
