Fernando Alonso asserts that he has “no problem” working with Honda in Formula 1 again after it announced a 2026 deal with Aston Martin.

The Japanese manufacturer will supply Power Units to Aston Martin in 2026, when the new cycle of regulations comes into play.

Alonso has a troubled history with Honda, as McLaren ran its unreliable engines that also lacked pace from 2015 to 2017.

The Spaniard was often critical of the power unit during that time, including during a famous incident at the 2015 Japanese Grand Prix when he labelled it a “GP2 engine”.

However, Honda found its stride after parting ways with McLaren but exited the sport in 2021 after a handful of successful years with Red Bull.

Alonso will be 44 years of age at the start of the 2026 season, placing doubt over his position on the grid at that time.

“I don’t know what I will do in 2026, I would be lying if I tell you that I know right now,” he said.

“For sure I feel fresh, I feel motivated now, I feel sharp, still fast, and if I keep enjoying I would love to keep racing.

“But there’s going to be one time and I know that one day I will wake up and I will not feel maybe motivated or happy to keep travelling and all these kind of things.

“Or maybe I don’t feel fast and I will be the first one to raise my hand and say maybe it’s time.”

However, should he be present with Aston Martin, he states he has no issue collaborating with it once again.

“And then racing again with Honda, no it’s going to be no problem at all from my side. I know that it didn’t work out last time in 2015, ’16, ’17.

“It was even worse maybe for some of my team-mates like Stoffel or whoever, coming from dominating F3, F2 and then joining the project that maybe was not fully ready back then.

“But I think they proved that they have a competitive package now. They won the championship in ’21, they won the championship in ’22, most likely will win the championship in ’23, so I think they now have a very strong package.

“It’s a new set of regulations but I think it will be a very exciting project, for sure.”
