Wolff hails ‘promising signs’ as Mercedes looks to improve W14

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says that there are “promising signs” emerging from the factory as it aims to add pace to the W14 car.

The Brackley-based squad’s 2023 Formula 1 season has started in disappointing fashion, as it is once again competing off the front-running pace.

In 2022, it took just one race win and often languished off the competitive pace.

It carried over its unique ‘zero sidepod’ car concept for the current campaign, but is set to change going forward after accepting defeat over the longevity of the design.

Last time to in Jeddah, Mercedes finished ahead of both Ferrari cars – a result that encouraged Wolff.

“The progress we saw in Saudi Arabia was encouraging. We maximised the package we had and scored some solid points.

“More importantly, we continued to learn and understand more about the W14 and our development direction. Everyone back at base has been hard at work to turn these learnings into performance.”

Mercedes previously stated that there would be visible changes to its car in the coming races, but Wolff is remaining cautious over how they will translate into on-track form.

“The signs we are seeing back at the factory are promising,” he said.

“We have got to take it step by step, though, and won’t get carried away until we see performance translated into lap time on track.

“The competitive order behind Red Bull is tight, with small margins having a big effect on points scored. There remains a significant gap to the front and that is ultimately what we are interested in closing.”

This weekend, Albert Park in Melbourne hosts the third round of the 2023 season, where Wolff is eyeing up another strong points haul.

“We are looking forward to Australia. It’s a country serious about its motorsport with a great racing tradition, and the fans are super passionate,” Wolff commented.

“Albert Park is a circuit with unique characteristics, which we will have to work hard to adapt to with the W14.

“As always, we will look to maximise the car we have, and score as many points as our potential currently allows.

“We are not where we want to be – but that won’t stop us from racing hard and giving it everything we’ve got.”
