Alonso joins exclusive club with 100th podium finish

Fernando Alonso has joined an exclusive group of Formula 1 drivers to reach 100 podium finishers in their careers.

The Spaniard ended the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in third place, which was only verified hours after the race had ended.

Alonso was issued a 10-second time penalty after the Stewards deemed that he served an in-race penalty incorrectly.

As a result, he dropped down to fourth place, with George Russell promoted to third.

However, Aston Martin requested a right of review and successfully had the penalty overturned, reinstating the 41-year-old second consecutive podium.

Alonso has been starved of F1 success in recent years, as it the last seven seasons of competition, he has taken just three podium results.

But Aston Martin’s step forward for the 2023 campaign has seen him take back-to-back top-three finishes, marking a dream start to life at the Silverstone-based outfit.

Alonso is now one of only six drivers in F1 history to breach the 100 podium mark.

Topping the list is Alonso’s current competitor, Lewis Hamilton, who has 191 podiums to his name.

Also featured on the list are his old title rivals Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel, with Alain Prost fourth on the list.

Kimi Raikkonen is fifth, with Alonso now just three podiums behind matching his former team-mate and entering the top five.

Another notable driver inside the top 10 is Max Verstappen, who bagged his 79th career podium on Sunday in Jeddah.
