Ferrari undertakes ‘precautionary’ PU changes after failure

Ferrari has opted to equip the SF-23s of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz with a new power unit after Leclerc’s failure in Bahrain.

Ferrari described the move as a “further precaution” following the issue which sidelined Leclerc in Bahrain.

The operation confirmed during the build-up to the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend that Leclerc has been forced to take on a third Control Electronics of the season.

That came after an issue was detected during fire-up on race day in Bahrain, prompting Ferrari to move him onto his second CE, which then suffered a terminal failure in the race.

Due to exceeding his allocation Leclerc enters the event with a 10-place grid penalty.

Ferrari has now moved to change the ICEs on both cars while Leclerc has also moved onto his second MGU-H of the year.

McLaren’s Lando Norris, who suffered a pneumatic pressure issue in Bahrain, has also taken on a second ICE, Turbocharger, MGU-H and MGU-K of the year.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez has taken on a second Control Electronics and Energy Store.

All of the changes, bar Leclerc’s already confirmed sanction, have been undertaken without incurring any penalties.
