Doohan to hold Alpine F1 reserve role in 2023

The Alpine Formula 1 team has confirmed that Jack Doohan will be its reserve driver for the 2023 campaign.

Doohan joined Alpine’s programme last year, with the French manufacturer supporting his first full-season in the FIA Formula 2 Championship.

Doohan ended the F2 season sixth in the standings, taking three pole positions and three race wins during the ueqr.

He also gained more F2 experience as he took part in two FP1 sessions with Alpine, as well as the post-season test from Abu Dhabi.

In 2022, Alpine’s official reserve driver was Oscar Piastri – however the Australian has since signed to race for McLaren in F1 alongside Lando Norris.

Doohan will return to the F2 championship this year and will be on call to race in F1 should the team need a replacement for Pierre Gasly or Esteban Ocon.

“I’m really excited to be working alongside both Esteban and Pierre this year,” Doohan said. “It’s a very strong line-up for the team.

“Both of them will provide solid data and help develop a fast race car together with the team.

“For me, I want to gain as much experience as I can from both of them throughout the year.

“I started to work more closely with Esteban last season especially in preparation for my two FP1 outings. I don’t know Pierre, so it will be good to welcome him to the team and learn things from him.”

The 20-year-old detailed what his role would entail for the upcoming year.

“The role has many different avenues,” he said. “I have to be ready in any circumstances in case one of the race drivers is unable to race for whatever reason.

“In that sense, I have to make sure I am prepared and ready for anything that might happen.

“More generally, it’s about shadowing the team and the drivers to help maximise the race weekend.

“I will do a lot of simulator sessions at Enstone and some test days in an old car to stay sharp in Formula 1 machinery.”
