Marc Marquez takes Mandalika sprint

Marc Marquez came out on top in a chaotic MotoGP sprint victory in Mandalika to regain the championship lead from Jorge Martin.

Martin led from the first corner after polesitter Raul Fernandez and Marco Bezzecchi were wiped out, but befell some misfortune towards the end of the race to lose out on a podium and gift the sprint to Marquez.

Marquez remained in the lead for the final quarter of the race and took the race victory to return to the top of the championship standings.

Fernadez and Bezzecchi both initially started well from first and second respectively, but were almost outdone by a stellar start from Marc Marquez despite wheelieing from fourth on the grid, while Fabio Di Giannantonio pulled alongside as they went four-wide down into the first corner.

Di Giannantonio forced Marquez to sit up, which caused Fernandez and Bezzecchi slightly behind to both hesitate and the pair made contact that forced both riders out of the race at the first corner.

The coming together between the top four meant that Martin was allowed to tuck under the pack and emerge in the race lead over Marquez, while Ogura moved up to fourth ahead of Di Giannantonio

Martin looked in complete control from that point on, but looked around the track with four laps to go and allowed Marquez through for the lead of the race and came under immediate pressure from Ogura.

Martin looked to close in again on Marquez, but made an error in Turn 16 to drop off the podium and into fourth place, as Ogura and Di Giannantonio were both promoted.

Although Ogura showed strong pace towards the end, Marquez was comfortable once hitting the front and took the line to record another sprint victory.

Ogura took second by 0.509s, while Di Giannantonio completed the podium in third.

Martin eventually crossed the line in fourth after his bizarre end to the race, with Alex Marquez completing the top five.

Pedro Acosta took the chequered flag in sixth after serving a long lap penalty for track limits, finishing ahead of Fermin Aldeguer while Francesco Bagnaia and Fabio Quartararo completed the points finishers.

Alex Rins completed the top 10 over Enea Bastianini, while Johann Zarco was 12th ahead of a close contest between Jack Miller and Franco Morbidelli for 13th, which was eventually won by the Australian.

Luca Marini led a trio of riders over the line in 15th, with Brad Binder 16th and Diogo Moreira 17th. Maverick Vinales was 18th after prevailing in a close fight with Toprak Razgatlioglu, while Aleix Espargaro completed the finishers in 20th.

After the coming together at the first corner, Bezzecchi and Fernandez were the only non-finishers of the sprint.
