A masterclass in energy management and pit strategy saw Dan Ticktum execute a thrilling charge through the field to secure victory at the Tokyo E-Prix.

Pole-sitter Jake Dennis looked set to convert his front-row start into a dominant win after controlling much of the race, but late-stage Attack Mode deployments and a decisive late overtake allowed Ticktum to snatch P1 in the dying moments.

Qualifying set the Grid for the Tokyo E-Prix

The Tokyo E-Prix was set for a strategic battle as drivers face high temperatures on the 2.575 km, 18-turn counterclockwise street circuit.

Andretti’s Jake Dennis secured pole position with a 1:11.863 lap in the final qualifying duel, joining Mahindra’s Edoardo Mortara on the front row.

Dennis advanced after Nico Mueller crashed in their Semi-Final matchup, while Mortara beat Antonio Felix da Costa to earn his front-row spot.

With track temperatures reaching 40.1°C alongside 74.7% humidity, battery cooling and tyre management were major factors.

On a tight layout where energy conservation is critical, strategy was expected to play a central role as the pack aims to challenge the front-row starters.

Going Green

Jake Dennis got away cleanly to lead Edoardo Mortara into the opening corners, while Antonio Felix da Costa held third.

Early drama triggered brief yellow flags in the opening sectors as Nico Mueller, Nyck de Vries, and Zane Maloney made premature pit stops, dropping them to the rear while da Costa set an initial fastest lap.

Once the course returned to green, Dennis maintained a narrow margin over Mortara, who kept the Andretti car under constant pressure within half a second.

Mid-pack battles intensified across the technical layout, with Norman Nato collecting a five-second penalty for a collision with Mueller at Turn 7.

By mid-distance, da Costa moved up to join the lead battle. Sebastien Buemi then triggered the first major strategy phase by activating Attack Mode from midfield, surging past competitors into the top five.

Dennis continued to manage his pace at the front, but Mortara remained glued to his rear wing.

As the race entered its final third, the front-runners opted for their mandatory Pit Boost stop. Dennis, Jean-Eric Vergne, and Taylor Barnard pitted in quick succession, handing the lead to Buemi, who had executed an impressive recovery drive.

Dennis briefly set the fastest lap of 1:15.473 before diving in, while an incident between Pascal Wehrlein and da Costa went under investigation.

Strategy gambles and final shootout

Following the pit-stop cycles on Lap 23, Oliver Rowland executed a sensational surge from 15th on the grid to seize the lead as initial front-runners Buemi, Di Grassi, and Da Costa dove into the pit lane.

The reshuffle proved short-lived, however. As Rowland and Pepe Marti made their own mandatory stops shortly after, Dan Ticktum capitalised on the pit-stop chaos to rocket into the lead for Cupra Kiro from sixth on the grid.

Behind him, race control opened an investigation into a Turn 15 collision between Buemi and Edoardo Mortara.

Ticktum maintained a solid gap over Nick Cassidy and Mortara before pole-sitter Jake Dennis mounted a comeback.

Dennis, having rejoined the fight with Attack Mode activated, reclaimed P1 on Lap 29, relegating Ticktum to second.

Meanwhile, Pascal Wehrlein suffered a disastrous extended pit stop alongside a time penalty for an earlier collision, effectively ending his race challenge.

A second wave of midfield Attack Mode activations swept the pack entering the closing stages, with Di Grassi, da Costa, and Nico Mueller taking extra power.

Dennis defended resolutely under relentless pressure from Ticktum, who kept the gap down to less than half a second while running on superior pace.

On the final lap, Ticktum executed a decisive pass on Dennis to claim a hard-fought victory for Cupra Kiro.

Dennis settled for second position, while Cassidy rounded out the podium in third after managing his power strategically through the final sprint.
