UPDATE: The race has been postponed until 2:00 PM central time on Monday.
The beginning of the Music City Grand Prix from Nashville Superspeedway is delayed due to weather in the area.
Pop-up rain showers have been threatening the speedway most of the afternoon, and one built near the track just as the IndyCar event was preparing to get underway.
Rain did not immediately fall over the speedway, but strong lighting was present in close proximity, which necessitated a pause in preparations and teams had to bring their cars back to the garage.
Even if rain does come, there are multiple types of track drying vehicles on site to help clear away the water.
An updated timeline was not immediately available, and track officials are working to create a new timeline.
The delay is particularly unfortunate for the business side of IndyCar, as the race was set to begin just as the World Cup final finished.
Both events air on FOX in the US, meaning there was a potential for a large crossover audience that could bring many new eyes to the series.
With the delay, there is a greater chance new and casual fans will tune to a different channel before the race begins.
Updates will be provided as soon as they are available.
