Update: Storms have moved on, but a recent lightning strike has pushed the start of qualifying back until at least 5:20 PM eastern time.
Qualifying for the NTT IndyCar Series at Mid-Ohio has been delayed due to weather.
Just as drivers were getting ready to climb into their cars on pit lane, the delay was announced by race control.
Lightning was measured near the track before any rain fell on the track, which immediately brought a 30 minute hold on proceedings.
The prospect of the storms building further led to an indefinite delay and teams brought their cars back to the garage area.
IndyCar races, and qualifies, on a wet race track when necessary, but lightning puts a stop to the show on account of fan and team safety.
Heat and humidity had been the main concerns throughout the weekend, but the storms are the first event to delay on track activity.
The plan is still to get qualifying completed this afternoon, but the situation is dynamic until the storms move out.
