IndyCar Officiating has announced two grid penalties ahead of the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America.

Santino Ferrucci of AJ Foyt Racing and Alexander Rossi of Ed Carpenter Racing were each handed a six-place grid penalty this weekend.

Both entries were deemed to have used too many engines this season following an unapproved engine change.

Engines changed out after Friday’s running mean that both entries have used a fifth engine this season, which is one more than allowed by the rulebook.

Ferrucci and Rossi were two of four drivers that had pre-emptive engine changes completed this weekend after Chevrolet found more copies of its engine with an issue.

The manufacturer identified a supplier issue affecting coatings on the valves of the engines, and has been changing out affected copies before their mileage limits in order to prevent further failures.

Pato O’Ward and Nolan Siegel also took a new engine Saturday morning, but both Arrow McLaren drivers have not used enough engines to take a penalty this weekend.

Ferrucci originally qualified seventh, but will drop six places to 13th before cars line up on the grid on Sunday.

Rossi had a poor qualifying effort and his penalty will drop him down to the 25th and final grid position.

It is expected that other Chevy-powered entries were suffer grid penalties before the year is out due to earlier failures associated with the supplier issue.

Before this weekend, only half of the season had been completed and penalties have already begun.
