WorldSBK rider Iker Lecuona has left the door open to a MotoGP return should he be offered a route back to the paddock.
The Spaniard stood in for Gresini rider Alex Marquez at Balaton Park at the start of June, finishing in seventh place and the highest non-factory Ducati rider.
But it’s fair to say the opportunity arose following his move to the Borgo Panigale squad in WorldSBK this season, where he has reeled off 18 consecutive podium finishes and sits a distant second in the championship standings.
Lecuona spent two seasons in MotoGP with Tech3 KTM and the factory KTM outfit before losing his seat at the end of 2021 after failing to deliver results that met the Austrian marque’s expectations.
Now with team-mate Nicolo Bulega rumoured to be set for a MotoGP move with VR46 in 2027, the 27-year-old was asked whether he would consider a return to the premier class.
“I’m not currently focusing on MotoGP, and I’m very happy in the Superbike World Championship,” Lecuona shared with Speedweek.
“I’m relaxed and have an incredible team with a very good bike. Thinking about MotoGP now would be a mistake.
“But I don’t want to say that I don’t want to go there, or that I want to stay here for my entire career. If an opportunity arises, I would weigh the pros and cons.
“Then I would decide with my manager, with whom I have a very good relationship, whether I return to MotoGP or stay here.
“At the moment, I’m not thinking about it, but never say never.”
