Dominant Dan Ticktum rockets to second Monaco E-Prix pole

Dan Ticktum dominated qualifying for the second race of the Formula E Monaco E-Prix double-header to take pole position for the second time in the weekend.

The Brit was on superhuman levels of form around the famous street circuit, and after his contentious collision with Antonio Felix da Costa in Race 1, fittingly blitzed the Portuguese in the final, taking pole by over half-a-second.

Mahindra’s Edoardo Mortara will start third, with Jean-Eric Vergne fourth.

Felipe Drugovich took an impressive fifth place, with Taylor Barnard rounding up the top six.

Group A

Race 1 winner de Vries, along with Ticktum – looking to bounce back from his penalty – Evans and Mueller formed part of Group A, and it was Ticktum setting an early benchmark – a 1:28.492s.

There was little movement until the chequered flag fell, when Mortara, Evans and Felipe Drugovich moved up into the top four, condemning de Vries to an early exit, underlining the unpredictability of FE.

Ticktum remained in P1, ensuring a possibility of a rejuvenation after his disappointing end Race 1.

Group B

Wehrlein, Rowland, Cassidy and da Costa were some of the big hitters in Group B, with the Portuguese setting the first benchmark.

With three minutes to go, the order began to rapidly change, with Rowland getting top spot, with Marti and Eriksson entering the top four, and then exiting it again, with Barnard and Vergne moving in.

Wehrlein was in serious danger of being eliminated, with Cassidy and Guenther also in trouble, the latter briefly topping the order before having his lap deleted for track limits.

With the chequered flag now out, Wehrlein moved into third, but was dropped to fourth by da Costa, and then Marti went fourth at the very end, to send Wehrlein out.

Duels

Evans vs Mortara was the first duel, and Mortara was a shade up in Sector 1, and kept his momentum throughout the lap to defeat Evans by two tenths with a 1:26.547s.

Drugovich was up against Ticktum in quarter-final number two, and the Kiro man was five hundredths behind in Sector 1, which became seven hundredths in Sector 2.

Despite losing over a tenth coming up to Sector 3, Ticktum miraculously made up two tenths by the end of the lap, his 1:26.478s taking him ahead of the Andretti driver.

Vergne against Rowland was the third duel, and there was barely a cigarette paper between the two early on, but Vergne was over a tenth up by Sector 2.

It was nearly two tenths by Sector 3, and making it over that by the completion of the lap, his 1:26.662s taking him through.

The final duel pitted da Costa against Barnard, with the Jaguar four hundredths up in Sector 1, and then a tenth up by Sector 2.

The first semi-final was Mortara vs Ticktum, the former set to provide stern competition, having been a one lap specialist across the season.

And the Mahindra was already a tenth up after Sector 1, but Ticktum overturned it, and was a tenth up at Sector 2.

It was then nearly two tenths by Sector 3, and that is how it stayed – a 1:26.217s putting Ticktum through to the final for the second day in a row.

Vergne vs da Costa began with da Costa a tenth up after Sector 1. But the Jaguar squirrelled a little on the exit of the tunnel, costing him time.

It was down to under a tenth by Sector 2, and then eight thousandths by Sector 3, but da Costa’s 1:26.581s took him to the final by 0.015s.

Final

It couldn’t be written – the two warring drivers from Race 1 being the two men to battle it out for pole in the final.

Da Costa was first to take to the track, but his lap was untidy, losing the rear end at Turn 1, and with Ticktum on that kind of form, it was inevitable he would take advantage of that with both hands.

A superb 1:26.222s saw him take pole position by a whopping six tenths of a second.
