Lewis Hamilton’s hand gesture towards Franco Colapinto at the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix has triggered an accusation of double standards aimed at the FIA by Max Verstappen’s GT3 teammate, Dani Juncadella.
The seven-time World Champion was shown to have raised his middle finger to the Argentinian upon overtaking him in the early stages of the race.
Hamilton was reacting to a minor collision with the Alpine driver, which saw his Ferrari SF-26 pick up damage that afflicted it for the remainder of the race.
Despite the gesture being caught on Hamilton’s onboard camera, there was no retrospective reprimand for the action.
Juncadella, quite literally on the other hand, was handed a €5,000 [$4,000 suspended] for making the same gesture at Augusto Farfus at the WEC season finale in Bahrain last year.
Verstappen was also given a community service order from the FIA for swearing during a press conference over the Singapore Grand Prix weekend in 2024.
And Juncadella, writing on social media, took aim at the sport’s governing body’s suppsoed lack of consistency.
“So I take it there wasn’t a fine, was there?” he wrote.
“The FIA’s double standards… They never fail.”
When challenged on whether Hamilton should or shouldn’t have been fined, Juncadella said: “I don’t think it’s right for him to do that. But slap him with a €2,000 fine, just like they did to me.”
