The NTT IndyCar Series has postponed qualifying due to continuing inclement weather at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Rain moved across the speedway roughly 30 minutes before qualifying was set to get underway, and it got heavier as the planned sessions approached.
IndyCar does race in the rain, at least on road and street courses, but the rain this afternoon in Indianapolis was heavy enough to cause standing water to pool on the surface.
After attempting to clear the standing water with service vehicles for some time, the cloud deck lowered and the medical helicopter was no longer cleared to fly.
Those conditions combined resulted in the series postponing qualifying until Saturday morning.
Cars had already been wheeled out to pit lane and drivers had climbed in their cars, making extra work for the crew who had to put it all away again.
The full knockout sessions will be held at 10:45 AM eastern time, which roughly when the morning warm-up practice session was to be run.
As a result, the warm-up is cancelled outright only qualifying and the race remain.
Weather for Saturday is forecast to be much more pleasant, with temperatures near 70 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny skies for the race.
