Marco Bezzecchi felt he achieved the best possible result with second place in MotoGP’s Spanish Grand Prix.
In Saturday’s Sprint, a tear-off visor stuck on his rear tyre delayed the Aprilia rider’s start before he crashed out, as Marc Marquez converted pole into victory.
Meanwhile, in Sunday’s long-distance race, Bezzecchi lost out to Alex Marquez on the start, who cruised to a dominant victory, before bringing home second after Marc crashed out at Turn 11 on Lap 3.
Bezzecchi leads team-mate Jorge Martín by 11 points and extended his advantage over Marc Marquez to 44 points after the reigning champion retired, despite taking pole and Sprint victory.
The 27-year-old reflected that second place was the best possible result, though he admitted there was little he could do to challenge for victory.
“Satisfied from the day because it wasn’t easy to make a good race, especially with Alex strong like this,” he shared post-race to TNT Sports.
“In fact, immediately I saw that he was super-quick, as I expected, and this was the maximum that I could do.
“But very happy, my feelings were good, but not the best, so happy to grab this second place.”
The Rimini-born rider acknowledged that race winner Alex Marquez had found an edge, gaining ground in areas where his Aprilia was weaker.
“He [Alex Marquez] was very quick especially in the fast and flowing parts – sector three, sector four,” Marco Bezzecchi told TNT Sports after the race in Spain.
“But, overall, he was on point everywhere. But sector three, especially, he had very good lines, very good grip [and] very good traction.
“I saw immediately, when he passed me in turn nine, I saw how he did turn 10 and I said ‘For sure he’s going to win’.
“In fact, he passed Marc [Marquez] pretty soon, and then Marc made the mistake and I was behind him, not super-close but I could see him, and I could see that he was riding in a perfect way.
“I tried to stay with him but it was not possible.
“Anyway, I’m okay.”
After Sunday’s 26-lapper, Bezzecchi now leads team-mate Jorge Martin by 11 points and extended his advantage over Marc Marquez to 44 points.
