Maximo Quiles prevailed in a three-way fight to claim victory in the Spanish Moto3 race at his home track of Jerez.
Quiles struggled on the initial getaway despite starting from pole position, but recovered to take victory by 1.991s.
The lights were on for an extremely long time as the yellow flags were waved for Leo Rammerstorfer’s stricken bike – but it was David Munoz made the best start from the middle of the front row to take the lead of the race.
Matteo Bertelle crashed in the middle of the pack after contact with Adrian Fernandez on the exit of Turn 1, as the 26-rider field remained grouped together on the opening lap.
Polesitter Quiles was caught out on the initial getaway but managed to make his way past Joel Esteban and into second before passing Munoz to take the lead at the end of the first lap.
Despite his early contact with Bertelle, Fernandez had the pace to challenge at the front and passed Esteban for third before getting through on Munoz in second.
The front three continued to break away, but a mistake from Quiles coming out of the final corner on Lap 7 allowed Fernandez to lead for the first time.
With five laps to go, it remained Fernandez, Quiles and Munoz in the top three, with Marco Morelli attempting to chase the trio down after breaking away from the second group.
As Morelli started closing, Quiles decided it was time to strike and turned under Fernandez to take the lead.
Munoz saw the action ahead and made his own move on Fernandez to move up to second and keep the pressure on Quiles over the final few laps of the race.
However, Munoz started to suffer with his leg injury with two laps remaining and fell into the clutches of Fernandez and Morelli – with the Argentine producing a stunning move to pass both riders into second place.
The fighting behind allowed Quiles to cross the line for an almost-dominant victory, eventually finishing 1.991s clear of second place.
On the final lap, it was still all to play for in the fight for second. Morelli made an error and fell back behind Munoz and Fernandez, who rubbed shoulders on the run down to the final corner.
Morelli then tucked under the duo, which saw the riders cross the line three abreast – with Fernandez taking second and Munoz rounding out the podium in third.
Morelli narrowly missed out on a second Moto3 podium in fourth, settling 0.040s behind Munoz in the end.
Alvaro Carpe crossed the line in fifth, with Veda Pratama moving from 17th on the grid to sixth at the flag.
Valentin Perrone took seventh and provided the slipstream for the third group of riders – as David Almansa finished eighth and Jesus Rios claimed ninth.
Esteban rounded out the top 10 despite a strong initial start, with Brian Uriarte 11th at the chequered flag.
Casey O’Gorman earned 12th place, finishing the race ahead of Hakim Danish in 13th.
Joel Kelso held onto the third group of riders in 14th, as Rico Salmela picked up the final point in a distant 15th.
