An AJ Foyt Racing pit crew member has been given the all clear after having his foot run over during a pit stop in IndyCar’s Grand Prix of Long Beach on Sunday.
The entire field was making their final pit stop at once late in the race, leading to an extremely tight pit road.
As veteran Will Power exited his pit box, he inadvertently clipped the crew member in front of him.
The AJ Foyt team confirmed in a release that rear tire changer Ryan Marzec was hit, but escaped serious injury in the incident.
“Incredibly, Marzec finished changing the tire before crawling to safety as Collet exited the pit box. Marzec was transported to the infield care center and released after X-rays revealed no bones were broken.
“When asked about still changing the tire despite the accident, he responded, ‘Of course, that’s my job.’”
Power was given a drive through penalty for the incident, which caused him to drop down from his position inside the top 10.
He ultimately crossed the line in 19th, and continued a streak of unfortunate luck to start his relationship with Andretti Global.
“I feel bad that I hurt the guy,” said Power after the race, speaking to FOX Sports. “It’s very difficult to almost have three cars wide here, but I don’t think I could have gone any more left.
“I think I was almost touching [Lundgaard]. … You’re not going to see someone’s feet. [You’re being told someone’s] outside, outside so you’re looking out there and I must have just nicked his feet.”
The injured crew member was able to travel back to Indianapolis with the team Sunday evening.
