Leonardo Fornaroli completes Silverstone McLaren test

Reigning Formula 2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli has continued his development programme with a second test at Silverstone with McLaren.

Earlier this year, Fornaroli made his Formula 1 test debut at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Since his first official outing in F1 machinery, the Italian continued working closely with the team’s Woking base, as well as attending the Japanese Grand Prix, to fulfil his role as McLaren’s test and reserve driver.

During this second test at Silverstone, Fornaroli completed a total of 68 laps [393 km], 16 more laps than F1 drivers completed at last year’s British Grand Prix.

Fornaroli revealed that his run plan was built off his first test and was more complex than previously. Focusing mainly on longer runs with lower fuel levels, and switching through different tyre compounds throughout the session.

“The run plan was more advanced,” he said. “So I got to try some different setups and run with different levels of fuel, which continues to support my understanding of driving a Formula 1 car

When discussing his emotions following the test, Fornaroli claimed he was pleased with the improvements made since his first test.

“Another good day on track,” he emphasised.

“It was amazing to be back in the MCL60. Silverstone is one of my favourite circuits. So I’m grateful to McLaren for the opportunity to get back behind the wheel of an F1 car there.

I’m very happy with today, and I continued to make improvements from my test a few weeks ago, getting even more comfortable with these machines.”

McLaren also confirmed that Fornaroli would be back in the MCL60 later this season, partaking in several other tests at various circuits, to help develop his skills ahead of a potential F1 seat in the coming years.

“I look forward to continuing to test this year, something that is very important as part of my role as McLaren Mastercard Reserve Driver. And for my development within the DDP programme.”

The team will continue working closely with Fornaroli, who could potentially make his FP1 debut later this season for McLaren’s mandatory rookie Free Practice sessions.
