Formula 1 championship leader Kimi Antonelli has revealed a relaxed approach to the prospect of a prolonged season battle with teammate George Russell in 2026.
Taking two wins in the opening three races, Antonelli is currently the youngest championship leader in the sport’s history.
Holding a nine-point advantage over teammate George Russell, momentum is building behind the young Italian as he reaps the rewards of Mercedes’ start to the season.
The W17 is the most dominant car of 2026, placing pressure on Antonelli’s shoulders, with an emerging intra title fight with Russell becoming increasingly likely.
But Antonelli has shrugged off concerns that the growing rivalry inside the Mercedes garage will cause him issues as the sport prepares for the Miami Grand Prix next month.
“No, I’m not worrying about that, to be fair. I’m just going to focus on myself, on what I need to do, trying to get everything right in terms of procedure, starts, and driving,” Antonelli said to media, including Motorsport Week.
“I know how strong George is, and for sure it’s going to be very hard. Plus, I think Ferrari and McLaren will get closer, so it’s going to be important to stay on top of the game, as I said before, keep raising the bar.
“But I’m not focusing on or worrying about this at the moment. I’m just going to try to make the best out of the break and try to see how I can improve those areas in order to be back stronger.

A “big step” for Kimi Antonelli
Reflecting on the start of just his second year in the sport compared to his inconsistent rookie season in 2025, Antonelli highlighted the lessons learnt from his rough patch mid-season.
“I’ve made a big step, obviously, last year I went through a lot, and it taught me massively more than what I anticipated, and for sure it’s helping so far this year.
“Of course, there’s still a lot of work to do, but I definitely feel much more in control of the situation. The car helps, and I’m going to try to be ready and everything because it’s one of those opportunities that don’t happen every day.
“So obviously, yeah, really, really grateful with the car that the team has provided us so far, and yeah, I just need to keep my head down.”
Antonelli has been coached by Mercedes specifically on how to deal with these situations, highlighting the effectiveness of its Young Driver Programme.
However, training can only take a driver so far, so watching him adapt and cope with the twists and turns of a title battle will prove interesting.
