McLaren development driver Richard Verschoor has thrown his support behind Max Verstappen and his criticism of Formula 1’s new technical regulations and comparisons to Formula E.
Fellow Dutchman Verschoor has given backing to his compatriot, and given insight into Holland’s view of Formula E following Verstappen’s blunt intervention.
Verstappen infamously labelled the new F1 technical regulations as “Formula E on steroids”, believing distinct differences should exist between the two series.
Attracting criticism for his comments, they have resonated with a large portion of F1’s fanbase, as the new rules continue to divide audiences.
But Verschoor stood by Verstappen’s comments, highlighting than drivers leave nothing on the table in Formula E.
“Well, I think there’s many people watching Formula E,” he said when asked by Motorsport Week in Madrid about Holland’s perception of the sport.
“There’s many people supporting Formula E.
“I think the biggest thing is that they are most people, mainly drivers, but, you know, they get influenced a bit also by what the drivers say. Formula 1 should be the category where you push the car to the limit and you don’t have to hold back as a driver.”

Richard Verschoor: Formula 1 moving in ‘direction of saving’
Verschoor revealed he too disagrees with the direction of F1, believing it it should have separate qualities to Formula E.
“And, of course, if now it goes more into the direction of saving, it’s not really what F1 should be about, in our opinion, I guess, in my opinion,” he said.
“So I guess that’s where some of the frustrations are coming from. And I think Formula E is just a different kind of series, you know. I think they should be separated.I think it’s good to have a series like this.
“But F1, I feel like, should be more about pushing the best car to the limit.”
Verschoor’s intervention will do little calm the growing storm over F1’s new regulations and comparison’s to the all electric series. Time will tell if the voices will become louder or begin to dissipate.
