How Arvid Lindblad drew Max Verstappen comparisons in F1 debut

It looks like F1's newest rookie more than capable of handling the sport

Arvid Lindblad echoed shades of a young Max Verstappen as he caught the ire of the four-time World Champion on his debut during the 2026 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.

Lindblad made a strong impression on his F1 debut.

The 18-year-old had made it into Q3 at the very first time of asking for the Faenza-based squad, registering the ninth-fastest lap of the qualifying session, on Saturday, at the Albert Park Circuit.

During the 58-lap race, Lindblad battled the likes of Verstappen en route to taking the chequered flag in eighth.

The rookie had his elbows out, putting up a stellar defense against the Dutchman. And while the Red Bull driver did eventually manage to find his way through, it did negate any hopes he would have had to catch Lando Norris for fifth, just up ahead the road.

Lindblad might have frustrated the four-time World Champion on track, but the British-Swedish driver caught Verstappen’s full ire in the pitlane on Lap 19.

As the drivers filtered into the pitlane after Valtteri Bottas’ stranded Cadillac called out the VSC, Verstappen, who was trailing Lindblad into the pits felt he was brake-checked by the 18-year-old.

This prompted the Red Bull driver to fume over his team’s airwaves. “F***ing brake-checking!,” he exclaimed on the radio.

“Got f***ing brake-checked the whole pit lane.”

Lindblad refuses to ‘roll over for the senior guys’ in F1

Verstappen was not the only driver who found it difficult to get past the VCARB-03 of Lindblad.

Haas’ Oliver Bearman spent majority of his race on the gearbox of the 18-year-old, and without a way through.

After the race, when asked about his battles on track, especially with Verstappen, Lindblad issued a defiant warning to his rivals.

“I’ve been working my whole life to get to F1,” he told Sky Sports F1.

“I have a lot of respect for the senior guys in the sport who have done an amazing job but I’m also not going to roll over and give them the place.

“I’m here to fight. When I’m in the car, I’m a ruthless competitor and I’ll take every inch that I can get.”

Arvid Lindblad’s Max Verstappen-like mentality gets praise from Martin Brundle

While four world titles may have mellowed and matured Verstappen, it’s not easy to forget the 17-year-old trailblazer who had entered the sport with Toro Rosso [now Racing Bulls] in 2015.

The audacious move around the outside of Felipe Nasr at Blanchimont, the ridiculously ‘easy-looking’ overtake on Nico Rosberg at Interlagos, in the wet, and the absolute refusal to bow down to the senior figures of the sport, on track, were all trademark Max Verstappen.

Lindblad’s showing throughout the Australian GP weekend emanates the same aggression and self confidence that almost borderlines on perceived arrogance but is what made Verstappen the feared rival on track that he is today.

It’s hard to ignore how Lindblad is echoing shades of a young Verstappen, something that didn’t slip past by Brundle who called their on track battle, last Sunday.

“Sister team, of course, but Lindblad, in his first Grand Prix, has made it clear that he won’t be intimidated by Max Verstappen, who has gone very wide in turn three,” he said.

“The opposite of the 18-year-old, who is keeping his head under extreme pressure. There’s nothing between these two teams anymore, where they used to say, ‘Eh, just let them go, move over, please?’ There isn’t a world championship at stake at the moment.
