Max Verstappen has been confirmed as a participant in this year’s Nurburgring 24 Hours, driving a Red Bull-sponsored Mercedes.
The likelihood of the Dutchman competing in the race was highly speculated, given the NLS2 forebearer race – needed to be competed in to secure the 24 slot – had been moved to March 21 – between the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix – to accommodate Verstappen’s appearance.
Verstappen’s supposed judgement on Red Bull’s new Formula 1 powertrain was also said to be a factor.
And, with just one day after the first Grand Prix of the year – in which he finished sixth, having started 20th – Verstappen, who consistently damned the new F1 regulations over the past weekend, has been formally announced for the drive.
The car, with Red Bull livery, is entered by Mercedes-AMG, and Verstappen will be partnered by Dani Juncadella, Jules Gounon and Lucas Auer.

“The Nurburgring is a special place,” the four-time World Champion said.
“There’s no other track like it. The 24h Nurburgring is a race that’s been on my bucket list for a long time, so I’m really thrilled we can make it happen now.
“Last year, I was able to get my DMSB Permit Nordschleife and participate in NLS9, that we won.
“That preparation is very valuable, as we have learned a lot that we can take into our programme this year with NLS2 and the 24-hour race.
“We’ve got a strong line-up with Dani, Jules and Lucas and great support from Red Bull and Mercedes-AMG Motorsport.
“Now it’s about putting in the right preparations before the events, so we can maximise everything in the races.”
