Williams has announced the return of 1996 Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill, with the former driver rejoining the team as an ambassador during the 30th anniversary year of his championship success.
Hill’s comeback reconnects the Grove-based outfit with one of the most recognisable figures from its most successful era in Formula 1.
The Briton first joined Williams in a testing capacity before stepping up to a race seat in 1993.
He quickly established himself at the front of the grid, securing his maiden grand prix win at the Hungarian Grand Prix in his debut season as a full-time driver.
He emerged as a consistent title contender soon after.
In 1994, Hill played a major role in delivering the Constructors’ Championship and pushed the Drivers’ battle to the final round, where a contentious clash with Michael Schumacher ultimately decided the outcome.
Hill completed his championship journey in 1996. Eight victories across the season placed him firmly in control of the standings, and he sealed the title with victory in Japan.
The triumph also saw him become the first son of a F1 World Champion to win the drivers’ crown.
Across his Williams career, Hill collected 21 race wins alongside 20 pole positions and 19 fastest laps, cementing his place among the team’s most successful drivers.
His achievements were also recognised away from the circuit with two BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards.

Returning to the team he won a title with
Reflecting on his return, Hill said, “Williams is truly a special place for me, and where some of the defining moments of my career took place.
“I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of this sport and to have achieved what I did, and returning as an Ambassador is a real privilege. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the team’s history and help to support its legacy and future.”
Hill joins the ambassador roster for the 2026 season following Jenson Button’s move to Aston Martin.
He will work alongside former Williams team-mate Jacques Villeneuve, who captured the 1997 drivers’ title after racing with Hill the year before.
Jamie Chadwick also continues her involvement with the team, combining ambassador duties with mentorship support for Williams’ latest F1 Academy signing, Jade Jacquet, as she begins her rookie campaign.
Team principal James Vowles emphasised the importance of Hill’s return, adding, “It’s an honour to welcome Damon back to Atlassian Williams F1 Team as an Ambassador.
“Few individuals represent this team quite like him. Damon played a defining role in one of the most successful eras in our history, becoming a World Champion with Williams and leaving a legacy that continues to inspire the team today.
“We’re also delighted that Jamie Chadwick and Jacques Villeneuve will continue with us as Ambassadors.
“Together, they form an impressive line-up that reflects everything Williams stands for: our history, our commitment to opening doors and developing talent, and our ambition to compete at the very highest level again.
“Having figures like them representing Williams as we move forward is something we’re immensely proud of.”
